This powerful and symbolic artwork was inspired by the tragic mass stranding of pilot whales on Kommetjie Beach near Cape Town on 30 May 2009. On that day, dozens of whales from a single pod came ashore, drawing volunteers, marine scientists and members of the public who worked tirelessly in an attempt to guide them back to the sea. Despite these efforts, many of the whales repeatedly returned to the shore and were ultimately humanely euthanised to end their suffering, leaving a profound emotional impact on all who witnessed the event.

The painting reflects this moment of collective grief and compassion. Figures of policemen who carried out the difficult task appear symbolically as mourning “angels of death”, standing on either side of the scene. Nearby, young girls sing softly to the dying whales — a gesture of tenderness and humanity during a deeply tragic event.

At the centre of the composition, the whales themselves become part of a greater cosmic narrative. The universe glows in the distance, while new eggs of life at the base of the painting represent renewal and the ongoing cycle of life, death and rebirth within the natural world.
